Course overview
This course will provide a foundational understanding of midwifery practice and professional frameworks within local and global contexts and to introduce the concepts of lifelong learning, critical thinking and evidence-based practice. Contents include Lifelong learning; introduction to academic and critical thinking skills; fundamental knowledge of professional practice, including professional practice standards, codes and guidelines, professional regulation and association and scope of practice; professional boundaries. History and politics of the midwifery profession; the midwifery philosophy of being ‘with-woman’; woman-centred care; models of care; midwifery continuity of care; role of midwives in improving global health within the context of international research and public health programs. Research, evidence-based practice, research methodologies, law and ethics, equity and rights, communication and teamwork skills, an overview of the Australian healthcare system; maternal and neonatal safety and quality framework.
