Course overview

This course combines experiential learning in placement with integrated teaching and assessment across all domains of the Doctor of Medicine program. It builds on skills and knowledge developed in the previous courses of the program.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically reflect on environmental, social and psychological determinants of health, including aspects relating to health inequalities and cultural diversity, and relate this to health outcomes.
  • Demonstrate a safe and comprehensive approach to patient assessment and use these to inform clinical decision making.
  • Describe and perform, as appropriate, relevant interventions, including safe prescribing.
  • Describe the person-centred management of common clinical scenarios taking into account legal and ethical frameworks.
  • Effectively and safely communicate person-centred clinical information in a variety of formats.
  • Demonstrate professional attitudes and behaviour in interactions with patients, relatives, and health and other colleagues to optimise patient outcomes.
  • Explore the factors in the placement setting that affect access to health services, the models of care delivery, and the experiences of patients, drawing on an understanding of the Australian health care system.
  • Describe Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander knowledges of wellbeing and models of health care, including community and sociocultural strengths.
  • Describe best practice approaches that lead to improved and sustained positive Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing outcomes.
  • Demonstrate person-centred care including sensitive and effective communication with patients and their families/carers, cultural safety, and a consideration of a patient’s physical, mental, developmental, emotional, social, economic, environmental, cultural and spiritual needs and their geographic location.
  • Apply an understanding of the aetiology, pathology, clinical features, natural history and prognosis of common and important conditions.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and leadership including adherence to the policy “Assessment of Professionalism in the MD”
  • Reflect on current skills, knowledge and attitudes, and plan ongoing personal and professional development.

  • must have completed all of MEDI4001 Medicine, Cancer and Palliative Care and Psychiatry/MEDI4002 Surgery and Musculoskeletal Medicine

  • If the following course has not already been completed THEN must be enrolled in MEDI5003 Women’s and Children’s Health (Rural) Part 1
