Course overview

This course explores the strategic communication function across various industry sectors. Topics may include government and political communication, the not-for-profit sector, corporate communication, lifestyle and fashion public relations, and sports communication. Strategic communication specialisations, such as internal communication, financial public relations, leadership communication, stakeholder engagement and corporate social responsibility, may also be covered. The course also explores the agency environment, culminating in a student-led agency project for a real client.

Course learning outcomes

  • Evaluate the characteristics, opportunities and challenges of different specialisations and industry sectors within strategic communication
  • Apply the professional competencies and skills required of strategic communication practitioners
  • Explain the operations and functions of the agency environment and develop a professional response to a client brief
  • Analyse internal communications and leadership communication styles within an organisation and make recommendations for improvement
