Course overview

To build on the concepts and skills students acquired in the introductory film and television courses through the production of short narrative fiction scenes with a focus on director-actor techniques, and the core creative strategy of mise-en-scène. The course will focus on the collaborative process between directors, actors, production designers and cinematographers to create meaningful moving images for film and television.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply storytelling knowhow to analyse and evaluate a scripted cinematic narrative fiction scene
  • Create and articulate a cinematic vision with insights gained from the script analysis
  • Work with a range of actor-director techniques to achieve a truthful screen performance
  • Employ theoretical and practical storytelling techniques to integrate actor performance with the cinematic vision
  • Apply the core creative strategy of mise-en-scène to turn a cinematic vision into meaningful moving images
