Course overview

This intermediate course extends student understanding and knowledge of how genre operates by critically evaluating and exploring distinct film genres. Students will review the main approaches of genres including westerns, science fiction, musicals, and horror, investigating how they are constructed and their change over time.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the history and development of genre theory, its various critical approaches and its key scholars
  • Analyse screen genres, in light of their formal construction and connections with genre theory
  • Critically analyse the importance of different genres and cross-media hybrids to Hollywood, national cinemas, and contemporary screen media, as well as the historic, economic and industrial processes that shape them
  • Apply critical thinking, reflection, research, and writing skills
