Course overview

This course will focus on understanding media as a dynamic network of intersecting cultures, economies, institutions, and texts. Students will be introduced to knowledge and theories about the history, evolution, and proliferation of media cultures, including TV, film, video games, social media, and podcasting, and consider contemporary shifts in the production and consumption of media texts.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate and understanding of the relationship between text and paratext using critical theories and frameworks
  • Conduct academic and media research and writing on media cultures, contexts and paratext
  • Apply media and communication studies scholarship on the history, evolution, and proliferation of media cultures
  • Analyse the relationship between text and paratext using conceptual and theoretical frameworks relevant to media cultures
