Course overview

To introduce students to key theoretical, formal, and practical aspects of screenwriting for film and television. This practice-led course will develop students’ storytelling knowhow and introduce them to a range of screenwriting skills and techniques, through the production and analysis of short-form screenplays. 

  • Screenwriting: ideation 
  • Screenwriting: constructing a cinematic narrative  
  • Screenwriting: dialogue, sound, script delivery and pitching 

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply storytelling knowhow to generate an original short-form cinematic concept
  • Analyse and evaluate a short-form cinematic concept within a range of theoretical and industry frameworks, and apply the knowledge gained to create effective narrative structures, and differentiated, believable characters
  • Employ a range of storytelling techniques to turn a cinematic concept into a short screenplay, formatted to an industry standard.
  • Design and deliver a one-page pitch document and present a verbal elevator pitch.
