Course overview

This course will introduce students to key platforms for creating digital media. Through hands-on creation, students will explore the principles of digital tools including photography, web design, photo manipulation, vector graphics and social media analytics. Students will gain critical perspectives on the importance of these tools in society and will develop creative skills to enable them to combine different kinds of media in complex and compelling ways. As a foundational making course, Digital Platforms introduces important practical design skills and media communication strategies that will prepare students for a global media job market, and which are further developed in the program.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply knowledge of the basic principles and concepts of digital photography, graphic design, interface design, and user experience design
  • Sharpen their understanding of social and cultural influences on aesthetics, and to apply this understanding to the creation of digital media

  • Communicate and critique project ideas with team members and peer learners
