Course overview

This is an advanced course in approximation techniques for solving complex dynamical systems.

Course learning outcomes

  • Recall, and be able to explain the assumptions underpinning, a range of mathematical models of complex systems (e.g., chemical reactions, nonlinear oscillators, heat transfer / diffusion, fluid flows)
  • Contextualise mathematical models to explain subjective choices in modelling approach and / or approximation method
  • Apply theory and techniques from the course to derive asymptotic solutions of complex mathematical models
  • Interpret results to communicate qualitative solution behaviour
