Course overview

This course aims to enable learners to design detailed deterministic mathematical models of physical systems using conservation laws, the calculus of variations, and the theory of multiple-scale systems. Once developed, learners will apply advanced analytical and numerical techniques to the models and interpret the results.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply analytical solution techniques to advanced models, including similarity and leading-order solutions
  • Implement numerical solutions for DE models, including the heat and traffic flow PDE models and stiff systems
  • Interpret analytical and/or numerical solutions to advanced mathematical models
  • Construct mathematical models from first principles, including using conservation laws and the calculus of variations, and reduced models using multiple-scale methods
