Course overview
Knowledge of group theory and of linear algebra is important for an understanding of many areas of pure and applied mathematics, including advanced algebra and analysis, number theory, coding theory, cryptography and differential equations. There are also important applications in the physical sciences. The course provides an introduction to the fundamental concepts in group theory and advanced linear algebra, emphasising a rigorous approach to mathematical reasoning.

Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the theory of linear algebra, including proficiency with the concepts of vector spaces, linear transformations, inner product spaces, INSERT OTHER TOPICS HERE
- Demonstrate skills in constructing rigorous mathematical arguments within the realms of group theory and linear algebra
- Apply the theory in the course to solve a variety of problems at an appropriate level of difficulty
- Demonstrate skills in communicating mathematics
- Demonstrate an understanding of the theory of groups, including proficiency with the concepts of subgroup, permutations, generators, homomorphisms, cosets and quotients
