Course overview

This course aims to enable learners to devise and apply deterministic and stochastic mathematical modelling techniques to real-world problems and case studies. Learners will also evaluate, solve, and analyse these mathematical models.

  • Modelling Techniques
  • Deterministic Modelling
  • Stochastic Modelling

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply dimensional analysis and nondimensionalisation to characterise the physical dimensions and dimensionless groups in a mathematical model
  • Design and solve mathematical models for real-world problems using appropriate discrete, continuous, and stochastic techniques
  • Interpret the meaning and utility of analytical and numerical solutions to discrete, continuous, and stochastic mathematical models
  • Collaborate with peers to develop a mathematical model for open-ended problem requiring self-directed investigation
  • Explain orally and in writing a real-world problem, a mathematical model of the problem, and a solution to the model
