Course overview

In this course, students will undertake a supervised research problem or to study a new area of fundamental or applied mathematics or statistics. Students will undertake, individually or in a small group, a research project in the form of a small part of a larger research project currently being investigated by an academic, a self-contained small research problem, a literature study to initiate a larger program of research, or an opportunity for the student to study an area of advanced mathematics or statistics not covered in the program curriculum, but which is of interest to the student.

Course learning outcomes

  • Undertake of a review of existing research literature.
  • Identify, from a literature review, an un-researched or unsolved mathematical problem.
  • Lay out and undertake a feasible research program.
  • Present to peers about the mathematical theories, techniques and methods adopted in a research project, as well as the significance of results obtained.
