Course overview

This course will increase confidence and ability in mathematical skills, to provide an introduction to the understanding of mathematical principles of algebra and trigonometry, and to introduce systematic problem solving techniques. A review of the language, skills and concepts underpinning a foundation for mathematics. Manipulating expressions with arithmetic, fractions and exponents. Solving linear, quadratic, and trigonometric equations and inequalities. Matrices and solving systems of linear equations. Manipulating and interpreting polynomials. The Cartesian plane, graphing and interpreting functions and equations for lines, parabolas, circles and trigonometric functions. Understanding and solving problems with angles, trigonometry, the unit circle and trigonometric identities.

Course learning outcomes

  • Comprehend and utilise mathematical language describing numbers, arithmetic, fractions, polynomials, graphing and trigonometry.
  • Manipulate algebraic expressions, equations, and inequalities to answer mathematical questions.
  • Graph functions and interpret graphs of functions in the Cartesian plane.
  • Use trigonometric identities and linear algebra to solve problems.
