Course overview

The aim of this course is to increase confidence and ability in mathematical skills, to provide an introduction to the understanding of mathematical principles of differential and integral calculus, and to introduce systematic problem solving techniques. Exponential and logarithmic functions; differential calculus; integral calculus.

Course learning outcomes

  • Calculate derivatives of functions using first principles arguments.
  • Apply rules of differentiation to find derivatives of more complex functions generated by products, quotients and composition.
  • Formulate simple problems involving related rates and optimisation in mathematical language.
  • Use the principles of elementary differential and integral calculus to solve applied problems involving rates and areas.
