Course overview
This course is organised around questions that are fundamental to understanding language as socially meaningful. These questions include how we are to understand the relationship between meaning and social action, and language as an interactive phenomenon. Key concepts and issues here pertain to the relationship between language and context, paradoxes raised by the interpretation of meaning, and how the co-construction of meaning is accomplished in particular social and professional settings.
Course learning outcomes
- Critically reflect on concepts and questions fundamental to understanding language as discourse
- Discriminate between different approaches to discourse analysis
- Apply their understanding of discourse analysis to an authentic example of language in context
- Articulate and warrant discourse analytical findings

If you are an international student, or a domestic student studying in a full fee paying place, and are continuing study that you commenced in 2025 or earlier, your fees will be available here before enrolments open for 2026.
