Course overview

This course explores the relationship between language and the self. Drawing on key concepts from narrative theory and inquiry, learners explore how language is implicated in ways that people understand themselves and others, and their social positionings, in and over time. Learners build capabilities in applying, reporting and reflecting on theoretical understandings of language as applied to real world challenges that impact on societal, institutional and personal narratives of identity and belonging, inclusion and exclusion.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify naturally occurring narrative data within authentic stretches of talk
  • Apply narrative theory and inquiry methods to elicit and analyse language data
  • Report on the affordances and limitations of narrative inquiry theory and methods
  • Reflect on the significance of intersecting personal and societal narratives relevant to issues of identity, belonging and inclusion
