Course overview

This course will enable students to apply their existing linguistic knowledge to analyse language as discourse and exercise their judgement to choose between different approaches. This course focuses on the different ways in which language can be understood as 'discourse'. Students will consolidate and advance their linguistic knowledge, exploring the relationship between language and context, the role of language in interaction, connections between linguistic and social theory, and how meaning is accomplished in language. They will critically evaluate different approaches to discourse and analyse examples of discourse selected accorded to their own social and professional interests.

Course learning outcomes

  • identify different approaches to discourse
  • identify and analyse complex features of the discourse
  • exercise critical thinking and judgement to choose between different approaches to discourse
  • effectively communicate analyses of discourse and the justifications for the choice of those analyses
