Course overview
This course will explore issues regarding federal criminal law generally, as well as examining defence discipline law as a particular case study in federal criminal law. The course will draw on practical and theoretical perspectives, and students will be required to apply federal criminal and defence discipline law to resolve practical problems as well as to critique it from a range of perspectives. It will include examination of a selection of key domestic, civilian offences which may include terrorism, espionage, people smuggling, slavery and child sexual offences.
Course learning outcomes
- Evaluate and apply principles of federal criminal and Defence discipline law to a range of complex legal problems.
- Critique the operation of federal criminal and Defence discipline law from theoretical, practical and policy perspectives.
- Undertake legal research at a high level of complexity, especially in relation to key domestic and civilian offences under criminal and Defence discipline law.
- Effectively structure and articulate legal arguments relevant to criminal and Defence discipline law orally and in writing.
