Course overview

An introduction to the concepts and principles which underpin environmental law. The course will typically address the following topics: the meaning of environment and the current state of the environment in Australia; principles of international environmental law; Constitutional responsibilities and roles relating to the environment; environmental planning through environmental impact assessment and land-use/planning law; environmental protection and pollution law; the protection of biological diversity; water resources law; and environmental dispute resolution.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify key environmental issues at the national, state and local level
  • Demonstrate knowledge of key principles of national and state law pertaining to protection of the environment;
  • Describe State and Federal powers, responsibilities and institutions in the field of Australian Environmental Law
  • Analyse the relationships between environmental laws across multiple sectors and jurisdictions (local, state and national)
  • Apply legislation, regulations and case law to issue advice in relation to environmental problems
  • Demonstrate basic proficiency in use of the online Planning and Design Code.
