Course overview
This is an elective course that aims to provide students with advanced understanding of the law of succession in Australia. It examines the legal requirements of wills, intestacy, family provision and the administration of estates from practical, policy and theoretical perspectives. Effective written and interpersonal client interaction skills are essential to navigate this complex area of law and so assessment tasks will require students to undertake simulated activities to prepare them for the personal and professional challenges inherent in this field of practice.

- Analyse the rationale and framework underpinning Australian succession law
- Apply the rules and practice of the law of succession to complex scenarios that replicate the issues that arise in legal practice
- Analyse and integrate relevant laws of property, taxation, family law, superannuation law and the law of trusts arising in a succession law context
- Identify and synthesise scholarly literature and primary legal sources relevant to supporting the analysis and resolution of complex succession law scenarios
- Take instructions from clients and communicate persuasively regarding the analysis and resolution of complex scenarios arising in succession law
