Course overview
This elective course examines the law governing work as it is evolving globally. Students will explore contemporary and controversial issues facing governments, employers, and workers in the industrial, social, and political context of Australian regulatory law mechanisms, international norms and comparative approaches. They will have opportunities to apply law of work and employment law doctrines to a range of contemporary topics, through research and analysis and authentic assessment tasks replicating the professional responsibilities of an employment lawyer. As graduates, they will be equipped as legal professionals informed of the political, global and social justice dimensions of this highly dynamic field.

Course learning outcomes
- Explain and apply relevant laws of work to complex hypothetical scenarios that replicate the issues that arise in legal practice
- Communicate complex written advice to a ‘client’ on the resolution of employment law matters
- Critically analyse the principles of the law of work and employment law and their national and international social and political context
- Formulate and sustain persuasive legal arguments regarding practical and theoretical problems in the law of work, with reference to academic sources, policy documents and debates, and national and international case law and statute
