Course overview
This course will focus on great texts of German literature from the time of the French Revolution to the present. Students will read and analyse the texts, examine them in their social and historical context and consider their impact on the development of German culture and their contemporary significance. The course aims to provide students with an advanced knowledge and understanding of important aspects of German cultural history, advanced skills in critical analysis and interpretation and advanced comprehension and written and oral communication skills in German.
Course learning outcomes
- Will be familiar with some significant texts, films and/or other media-historical materials that have played and still do play an important role in German culture
- Will have a greater understanding of German history and culture from the eighteenth century to the present
- Will be able to extract, synthesise and critically evaluate information from primary and secondary sources relating to topics treated in the course
- Will have the ability to work independently and cooperatively to explore some of the issues and questions raised in or by the texts, films and/or other media-historical materials in more depth
- Will be able to communicate information, ideas and arguments about topics treated in the course cogently and coherently in German
- Be able to identify ethical, social and cultural issues raised by the texts, films and/or other media-historical materials and interpret them within their social and cultural context
- Will have an excellent foundation for further study and research in German language, literature and culture and for travel, study or work in a German-speaking environment
