Course overview
This course will extend students' proficiency in spoken and written Italian at an advanced level. Students will focus on vocabulary, structures and texts related to a range of advanced linguistic situations, themes and topics which develop accuracy, flexibility and fluency. Students will further develop intercultural knowledge integral to a range of situations and tasks and through an online Italian community participation program. Students will investigate representations of identity, place, gender and public institutions through a selection of twentieth century Italian narrative and film.
Course learning outcomes
- analyse and use the main structures and idioms of Italian in the production of speech and writing at near native speaker level
- identify and use the varieties of Italian in various social contexts
- display linguistic and cultural sensitivity in formal and informal interactions
- analyse the grammatical and sociolinguistic concepts relating to the topics and uses of Italian covered
- apply critical skills in the analysis of a selection of Italian novels and film
- critically reflect on the intercultural aspects of the literary and filmic representations studied
