Course overview
This course is designed for students who are non-native speakers of Mandarin. It aims to consolidate and extend the language skills developed in Chinese IIB through further oral, reading, writing as well as translation practice. The emphasis is on the application of the student's language training to the study of Chinese source materials reflecting contemporary culture, society and everyday life in China. It is expected that by the end of the semester students should have an active vocabulary of around 1,200 Chinese characters and associate compounds, and should be able to read simple texts in modern Chinese using reference materials.
Course learning outcomes
- Obtaining a level of competence in the four macro skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing to that of a third-year level at the Adelaide University.
- Mastering of the recognition and writing of about 300 new characters
- Mastering of the uses of 100 grammatical points
- A better cross-cultural understanding of China
- A better understanding of the Chinese society
- Develop the skills to communicate effectively in Chinese in both speaking and writing with creativity
- Examine the Chinese society and China vie the texts critically, in depth and with empathy, and in global context
- Develop the ability of approaching the Chinese community here and the Chinese in China with emotional intelligence
- Develop a self-awareness of ethical, social and cultural diversity.
- Develop the ability to analyze Australians, including the aboriginal Australian's interaction with the Chinese from the past to the present with the relevant contents in the course
