Course overview
This course aims to equip learners with little or no understanding of Modern Greek with the body of knowledge required to produce and understand basic spoken and written Greek language. The course introduces Greek language and culture through engagement with a range of multimodal texts. By introducing linguistic skills at the basic level, learners will develop lifelong language learning strategies and intercultural capabilities across Greek and other languages. This course aligns with the program’s intent to develop the ability to communicate in spoken and written modes across diverse linguistic and cultural situations, preparing learners to excel in a local and global employment market.
Course learning outcomes
- Apply selected grammatical, metalinguistic and sociolinguistic concepts appropriately during communication in Modern Greek
- Interpret and respond to a range of multimodal text types appropriate to a basic level of Greek language proficiency
- Reflect critically on aspects of contemporary Greek culture and society covered in the course
- Develop basic intercultural capabilities across their first language/s and Modern Greek, using a variety of course resources and activities
- Produce basic speech and writing in Modern Greek at an introductory level
