Course overview
This course is for students who have completed Chinese IB or meet the eligibility criteria. It consists of tuition in speaking, listening to, writing and reading modern standard Chinese. This course extends students' knowledge of basic grammar, vocabulary and structures found in the spoken and written forms of contemporary Chinese. The emphasis is on building up students' communicative skills in both speaking and reading through learning activities in class. It is anticipated that by the end of the course students will know about 650 Chinese characters and associated compounds related to contemporary China.
Course learning outcomes
- gain knowledge and understanding of the required vocabulary and grammar
- demonstrate ability to read and comprehend essays in Chinese on the topics covered in the course
- demonstrate ability to construct, write and type sentences and short texts in Chinese on the topics covered in the course
- demonstrate ability to discuss topics covered in the course in Chinese
- demonstrate ability to engage in short conversations in Mandarin in a culturally appropriate manner with Chinese native speakers
