Course overview

This course provides students with a comprehensive introduction to forms of journalism that represent a shift away from traditional Western paradigms, all sharing the goal of improving journalism’s positive influence on society. These reforms to traditional Western journalism include constructive journalism, solutions journalism, peace journalism and social justice journalism. Students will have an opportunity to discuss the ethical basis of these journalism techniques and will apply what they have learned to journalism practice.

Course learning outcomes

  • Understand and articulate why and how constructive journalism shifts away from traditional Western journalism practices
  • Recognise and evaluate techniques of constructive journalism in a range of news contexts and across different news mediums
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical and ethical underpinnings of emerging forms of journalism and their influences on society
  • Demonstrate ability to apply the techniques of constructive journalism, including solutions journalism and peace journalism, to journalism practice
