Course overview
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the key concepts in media and journalism in relation to the legal, geographic, political, professional, economic, social and technological contexts in which the media operate. Students will become familiar with a range of concepts and topics related to the operation of the media in Australia and globally. These will include consideration of the business of journalism, globalisation, technological change in newsrooms, media ownership and regulation. Other topics will include public relations and news, social and political influences on journalism, contemporary models of journalism practice and war reporting.
Course learning outcomes
- identify some of the key impacts of information technologies on contemporary journalism practice
- describe the commercial pressures on journalism and of issues related to media ownership and regulation
- articulate key influences on journalism in a Western contemporary setting
- identify different models of journalism practice and of global influences on journalism
