Course overview

The aim of this course is to further develop students understanding of history and theory regarding interior design practice. Building upon knowledge and research skills acquired in interior history and context 1, students will apply tactics of critical analysis, synthesis and evaluation to develop an understanding of history and theory regarding interior design practice. It will introduce students to various research-based practices and methods to expand their capacity to undertake innovative contemporary interior design. This course aligns with the programs intent to advance knowledge in interior architecture practices and human environments; socially, sustainably, physically and equip students for professional practice or as a pathway to higher degree research and further learning.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically review contextual issues influencing interior design
  • Situate reference images from historical, modern and contemporary international contexts in developing projects in interior design
  • Situate a designer’s statement in relation to specific contingencies and project constraints
  • Understand and apply research practices to an interior case study
  • Communicate effectively and accurately both verbally, in writing and in drawing and three dimensions
