Course overview
This course will provide students with the theoretical foundations, knowledge, and skills in data creation, curation, analysis and retrieval using metadata schemas and repositories. Theories, principles, and practices of data creation, curation, analysis and retrieval using metadata schemas; vocabulary for resource description; metadata element sets and value vocabularies design, evaluation and application to optimise intellectual access and longevity; issues around metadata sharing, metadata quality, Linked Data, and the future of metadata creation.

- Explain the purpose and value of different types of data.
- Apply different types of metadata content standards, and controlled vocabularies.
- Compare the different methods of data curation, management, analysis and retrieval.
- Describe content using a metadata schema, content standard, and controlled vocabulary of their choice.
- Design a metadata project based on real-world scenarios that are provided in the course materials.
- Evaluate the ethics and politics of data.
- Evaluate the importance of data to Information Services.
