Course overview
The aim of this course is to develop skills in data visualisation and communicating with data in business contexts. Data types, exploratory data analysis, human side of visualisation: Gestalt principles; choosing effective visuals; designing and constructing effective data displays; the role of preattentive attributes in visualisation; storytelling with data; case studies to illustrate fundamental concepts and best communication practices; data visualisation and communication using Microsoft Office tools and Tableau.
Course learning outcomes
- Describe and critically evaluate common data visualisation approaches.
- Use software to explore data and produce effective graphical displays of varying complexity to gain insights from data.
- Apply principles of effective communication to storytelling with data in support of business and strategic decision making.
