Course overview

This course aims to equip learners with the knowledge and skills to effectively use business information systems and business intelligence for enhanced decision-making. The course follows the CRISP-DM framework to decompose and structure the intelligence/analytic task and guides students in applying this framework in real-world scenarios. Practical component of the course introduces students to Tableau (professional visualisation tool) and KNIME (free, open analytic system similar to SAS, introducing the concept of workflow assembly from configurable nodes of functionality).

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the nature and role of business intelligence and analytics in decision-making, actionable insights, and contributing to the delivery of business value and competitive advantage in modern organisations
  • Apply the CRISP-DM framework in a realistic analytic task
  • Evaluate key data analytics methods; apply this knowledge in writing analytic plan
  • Critically evaluate models against the given business task
  • Summarise results of analysis and recommendations in a report and defend the report in discussion
  • Use modern analytics software tools to solve real world problems
