Course overview

This course aims to develop an in-depth theoretical and practical understanding of network security principles, protocols, tools and configurations, emphasising practical application. It will build upon knowledge gained to enable students to understand secure networking protocols, identify security vulnerabilities in networks, and recommend suitable mitigation techniques. This course will also enable students to evaluate a business organisation's networking requirements and infrastructure and recommend security solutions.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the security goals and attack models applicable to modern networks
  • Describe how each of the network layers can be secured using a range of current technologies
  • Assess secure design principles in network architectures
  • Apply a range of technical solutions including firewalls, IPS/IDS, and AAA where applicable to mitigate network threats
  • Implement secure communication channels according to a design by applying a range of network security techniques
  • Recommend the most appropriate ethical actions when undertaking offensive security activities
