Course overview

The aim of this course is to introduce students to a range of advanced research methodologies and practices necessary for developing an appropriate research topic or project. The students will be introduced to advanced Aboriginal research methodologies and constructions of knowledge. The students will also develop understanding of the ethical issues relating to research and will develop knowledge of protocols for negotiating research within the Aboriginal communities and/or with the Aboriginal people.

Course learning outcomes

  • Formulate a framework of methods that incorporates world views, protocols and ethics that inform appropriate research in Aboriginal community contexts
  • Distinguish between Aboriginal and western scientific research approaches.
  • Link research to Aboriginal community context and issues of priority concern to an Aboriginal community or communities.
  • Design a research project which meets community and University standards regarding knowledge production and ethics.
