Course overview

This course aims to explore the historical and contemporary perspectives of social and cultural determinants of Aboriginal health and wellbeing. The course aims to develop introductory knowledge and understanding of the relationship and tensions between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and mainstream health services as the basis for developing reflective and culturally responsive health professionals.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians pre-colonisation and identify key events since colonisation that have impacted the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
  • Discuss Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander concepts of health, wellness and wellbeing, including interrelationships with culture, family and connection to Country
  • Reflect on approaches to Aboriginal Wellness and Wellbeing and implications for professional practice
  • Reflect on own positioning as a health worker, and your understandings of racism, power and privilege
