Course overview

This course aims to utilise land-based learning to explore connections to space, place and belonging informed by old knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have been caring for and living sustainably on Country for thousands of years. The course explores Indigenous philosophies, knowledges, systems and processes as they apply to country, land and the environment to position Indigenous Worldviews as legitimate bodies of knowledge. By examining Indigenous systems of knowledge and their development across millennia students will gain insight and clarification of the practical, conceptual and spiritual role of Country within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Course learning outcomes

  • Examine the relationships between space, place, Country, land and belonging from an Aboriginal perspective
  • Identify Aboriginal values and beliefs as they relate and apply to the sky, sea, land and natural resources
  • Critically analyse representations and meanings produced about space, place and belonging in specific cultural sites
  • Discuss and evaluate Aboriginal knowledge systems and practices including cultural burning practices and sustainable resource management
