Course overview
To develop critical knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, languages, continuing strengths and health practices, and the ongoing impacts of colonisation in contemporary Australia, as a foundation for culturally responsive, anti-racist, and transformative health practice committed to supporting the self-determination and sovereignty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Course learning outcomes
- Describe Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander concepts of health and wellbeing, including interrelationships with culture, family and connection to country.
- Explain impacts of colonisation on health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and identify key resistance elements through self-determination, sovereignty and de-colonisation.
- Describe the influence of Cultural and Social Determinants of Health on the achievement of equitable health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
- Outline communication strategies that centre Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander peoples’ voices, experiences and ways of knowing, being and becoming in health and wellbeing contexts.
- Explain how personal cultural positioning can impact culturally safe health care delivery.
- Articulate a rationale for developing a personal and professional commitment to cultural humility, anti-racism, and allyship that is lifelong.
