Course overview

This course aims to introduce students to Indigenous theory and philosophy. It will explore knowledge constructions and how Indigenous Knowledges contest the assumptions and worldviews of mainstream, Eurocentric social science. This will allow students to develop their critical thinking, ethical leadership skills and to increase their progressive thinking in social science spaces.

Course learning outcomes

  • Recognise the nature of knowledge, its foundations, scope and validity
  • Explain the relationship between Aboriginal knowledges and other epistemologies or theories of knowledge
  • Interrogate the history and development of different knowledge systems and historical movements which have positioned dominant paradigms
  • Critically review the historical developments of the social sciences and its exclusion/inclusion of Aboriginal theory and philosophy
