Course overview

This course provides opportunity for students to explore the impacts of tourism on indigenous peoples and the economic, social, cultural, environmental and political motivations that encourage Indigenous peoples to engage in tourism. Context of Indigenous involvement in tourism; types of Indigenous involvement in tourism; demand for Indigenous tourism product; what Indigenous product is offered internationally, nationally, state-wide and locally; motivations for Indigenous involvement including economic, cultural, social, political; motivations for tourists' demand; demands for social justice through tourism and indigenous rights in tourism; policy and planning contexts such as set by the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Tourism Industry Strategy and the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; management issues pertaining to Indigenous Tourism including the debate concerning community-based tourism versus individual entrepreneurship; Indigenous Tourism operations in the practical context of the tourism industry; potential of Reconciliation Tourism; the ecological contexts of Indigenous Tourism and particularly relations with National Parks; comparative analysis of Indigenous Tourism experiences from around the world; future scenarios.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the economic, social, cultural, environmental and political motivations that are a catalyst to Indigenous people's involvement in tourism
  • Describe the variety of ways that Indigenous people can be involved in the tourism industry
  • Explain the social, cultural, environmental and political context of Indigenous Tourism
  • Describe the unique circumstances, the difficulties and opportunities that exist in the Indigenous Tourism sector
  • Assess the relevant policy documents that establish the context under which Indigenous Tourism currently operates
  • Explain the ethical dimensions to Indigenous Tourism, and in particular assess the potential of Reconciliation tourism and the contribution of Indigenous knowledge to ecologically sustainable development
