Course overview

The aim of this course is to enable students to analyse destination management issues and to evaluate the strategies used by the tourism and event industry to develop sustainable tourist destinations. Strategic choices and approaches to sustainable destination development; destination positioning; destination competitiveness; destination product development; special interest tourism development; crisis management; sustainability planning and tools; stakeholder approach; industry partnerships; industry quality control; social responsibility for community development; cultural diversity; environmental management practices; green leadership; visitor management approaches; sustainable tourism futures; and problematics of implementation of sustainability.

Course learning outcomes

  • Assess current trends and challenging issues in relation to tourism destination development.
  • Analyse the global complexity and diversity of external and internal factors on strategic tourism destination development.
  • Examine the dynamics of tourism planning and emerging management approaches at various levels and scales.
  • Critique the different strategies used by businesses within the tourism and event industry to achieve sustainability in tourism destinations.
  • Demonstrate Business Enterprise Skills in the context of the Tourism, Event and Hospitality Management discipline: i) Problem Solving (advanced level); ii) Ethical Awareness (advanced level); iii) Written Communication (advanced level); iv) International Perspective (advanced level).
