Course overview

The aim of this course is to develop and enhance student understanding of quality and safety, and risk management standards that apply in the Australian health and aged care sectors, together with knowledge of the processes and tools that can be applied to manage and improve client outcomes Quality and safety frameworks used in the Australian health and aged care sectors; Contemporary clinical risk management in Australia and internationally; The role of clinical governance in managing risk and improving outcomes including change management; The role of policy and legislation in facilitating improvements in and maintenance of quality and safety.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify and explain the quality and safety frameworks that apply in Australian health and aged care environments
  • Explain how clinical governance is applied in health care and aged care organisations
  • Critically appraise emerging trends in clinical governance and risk management as they relate to health and aged care service provision in Australia
  • Apply existing approaches to manage risk in order to improve quality and safety in the workplace
  • Explain the role and limitations of using evidence, including data, in identifying and managing quality and safety
  • Explain the role of clinical governance in change management processes in health and aged care
