Course overview

In this course, students will further develop and consolidate practical and professional skills in Radiation Therapy. Clinical skills development in basic CT scanning and other imaging modalities (eg MRI and PET) and their applications to radiation therapy, clinical skill development in EPI, kv OBI and CBCT for treatment verification and IGRT, patient care and communication, safety, professional behaviour, team working, self motivation and legal and ethical issues, clinical reasoning, mentoring; national protocols published on safety and quality in health care.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of scope of clinical skills and practice underpinning Radiation Therapy including principles, clinical application, procedures, participation with other health care members, information management, confidentiality, scope of practice and role within team.
  • Participate in the development and support of a beginning student, using reflection to assess their needs and build mentoring skills.
  • Apply problem solving skills in the clinical setting to maintain quality outcomes for the clinical site and the patient, as per Standard 1 of the National Safety and Quality in Health Service Standards (NSQHS).
  • Act ethically, professionally and in a safe manner by adhering to relevant codes of conduct, radiation safety guidelines and legislation, University of South Australia's clinical policies and the National Safety and Quality in Health Standards NSQHS standards (where applicable to clinical practice).
  • Begin to operate effectively as an autonomous responsible practitioner to perform procedures including complex and perform with assistance basic CT examinations including use of contrast media, and produce and evaluate complex treatment plans, incorporating multi-modality imaging of standard techniques.
  • Fulfil duty of care and communicate and act with respect to individuals, carers, and colleagues in clinical practice at an advanced level.
  • Demonstrate practical knowledge of various imaging modalities (eg MRI/PET) for use in radiation treatment planning and radiation therapy verification and an advanced beginner level computer planning skills and knowledge.
