Course overview
The aim of this course is to develop practical and professional skills in radiation therapy treatment and planning to an advanced level. Clinical skills development in external beam radiation therapy treatment and planning to a level of thorough knowledge and understanding of the technical skills of treatment and planning; patient care and communication; safety; professional behaviour; team work; self motivation and legal and ethical issues, scope of practice, self reflection, clinical reasoning, IGRT: preparation of recruitment and job selection procedures.; national protocols published on safety and quality in health care.
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate an intermediate knowledge of scope of clinical skills and practice underpinning Radiation Therapy including principles, clinical application, procedures, participation with other health care members, information management, confidentiality, scope of practice and role within team.
- Apply problem solving skills in the clinical setting to maintain quality outcomes for the clinical site and the patient, as per Standard 1 of the National Safety and Quality in Health Service Standards (NSQHS).
- Act ethically, professionally and in a safe manner by adhering to relevant codes of conduct, radiation safety guidelines and legislation, University of South Australia's clinical policies and the National Safety and Quality in Health (NSQHS) standards (where applicable to clinical practice).
- Operate effectively as a responsible practitioner to perform simple, standard external beam radiation therapy treatment and planning procedures with minimal assistance and assist with up to complex procedures, produce and evaluate 3D conformal, IMRT electron treatment plans of standard techniques, demonstrate advanced level computer planning and IGRT skills and knowledge.
- Fulfil duty of care and communicate and act with respect to individuals, carers, and colleagues in clinical practice at an intermediate level.
- Develop skills in reflective practice and career development planning.
