Course overview

The aim of this course is to develop advanced knowledge of the principles that underpin self-determination in care and develop knowledge and skills to support an individual's right to make choices. Supporting independence, choice and control over their needs, people making decisions, consumer directed care, patients and clients reaching full potential, advanced care directive.

Course learning outcomes

  • Discuss theories related to enablement and choice.
  • Explore the complex role of the consumer in navigating their healthcare.
  • Compare and contrast the rights of privacy and dignity in community healthcare settings.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of policy related to intervention recommendations enabling appropriate referral.
  • Discuss the role of the health worker in enabling health consumers in community settings to express sexuality, intimacy and fulfillment of basic needs.
