Course overview
The aim of this course is to develop knowledge of concepts of nutritional science applied to exercise and performance; develop knowledge in physiological and metabolic process involved in different physical activities; develop an understanding of the relationships between diet and exercise and performance and apply sports nutrition principles to exercise science. Nutritional requirements for training, pre-competition, competition and recovery for all athletes and occupational athletes across the lifespan. Hydration. Supplements and ergogenic aids. Assessing energy expenditure and body composition. Requirements for athletes with special needs, requirements in special circumstances and training in different environmental conditions.
Course learning outcomes
- Describe and apply principles of nutrition for exercise and performance at all competitive levels.
- Describe the special nutritional requirements for athletes with special needs, and athletes training in different environmental conditions.
- Identify nutritionally vulnerable athletes within the sporting population.
- Critically appraise sports supplements and food fads.
- Develop practical diet-related strategies to enhance training and performance in all athletes.
