Course overview
The aim of this course is to provide students with a knowledge of the biochemical basis of biological systems. The structure and function of amino acids and proteins in the body. Replication of genetic material and control of gene expression. The production, use and storage of energy in the body. Fat, protein and carbohydrate metabolism in health and disease.
Course learning outcomes
- Describe the structure and function of biological molecules, including nucleic acid, protein, carbohydrate and fat.
- Describe the metabolism of protein, carbohydrates, and fat.
- Explain the regulation and control of gene expression and protein synthesis.
- Research, critique and synthesise the biochemical literature.
- Apply biochemical knowledge to explain changes occurring due to exercise, nutrition and disease.
