Course overview

The aim of this course is to develop students' knowledge, skills and attitude to enable them to understand mental health and common mental health issues. Mental health and wellness across the lifespan cultural and social construction of mental illness; therapeutic communication skills; introduction to mental health conditions: schizophrenia, psychosis, depression, anxiety disorder, bipolar affective disorder, personality disorders; self-harming behaviours; suicide recovery; evidence-based practice; safety and quality; law and ethics; Mental Health Act; Guardianship and Administration Act.

Course learning outcomes

  • Examine the biopsychosocial, cultural and historical factors that shape the conceptualisation of mental health and common mental illnesses.
  • Respond to a person having a mental health crisis.
  • Differentiate between the clinical presentations associated with common mental illnesses.
  • Explain the statutory regulations that apply to people experiencing serious mental illness.
  • Explain how recovery values inform contemporary mental health practice.
