Course overview

The aim of this course is to develop students' awareness, understanding and competencies involved with teaching and coaching individuals or groups in sport. The students will develop an understanding of the role of the teacher and coach, philosophical positions, teaching styles and methods, methods of training, planning or programs, management and professional practice. Students will develop skills in teaching and coaching methodologies, instructional processes and strategies of meeting needs of diverse populations.

Course learning outcomes

  • Analyse teaching and coaching behaviour and the impact on participation and learning
  • Demonstrate competencies to plan, teach and coach a variety of sports and recreational activities to a broad spectrum of the population and reflect on professional practice
  • Demonstrate leadership capabilities for managing the responsibilities of teaching and/or coaching
  • Identify key recent research literature in the field with consideration of its applicability to future teaching and coaching
