Course overview

The title says it all. The course deals with the most exciting single development in world history since 1945 - the rapid and dramatic emergence of new states, societies and economies in the Asian mainland and islands, that began at the end of World War 2 and is still continuing today. It is designed for students within the School of History and Politics and for those from the professional faculties of law, Economics and Commerce who are seeking an introduction to the recent history and politics of a part of the world critical to their future careers. The course will have three main sections, dealing respectively with the Indian sub-continent, Southeast Asia and East Asia. These three regional modules will be preceded with a module discussing the broader issues relating to the subject matter of the course, and a concluding module that provides a summary and overview of the Rise of the New Asia as a whole.
